INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROJECT
The European Commission is committed to protecting the rights of people with learning disabilities in every member state.
It wants every person with learning disabilities to be part of the mainstream and included in society.
To help this happen it has given funding to FENACERCI (Portugal), Home Farm Trust (United Kingdom), Estonian Mentally Disabled People Support Organisation (Estonia), Hungarian Association for Persons with Intellectual Disability (Hungary), and the Social Assistance Co-ordination Centre (Latvia), submitted a project to the European Commission.
In 2005 and 2006, the Project Team will be part of a project called “Walking the Talk – mainstreaming as a process to Inclusion”. The project team will have two partners that have been working for some time in the field of self-advocacy and of raising awareness, FENACERCI and HOME FARM TRUST.
The project will find out what mainstreaming policies there are in each country. It will also find out what people with learning disabilities, families, professionals and policy makers know about these policies, and how they feel they could be made better.
The project will:
conduct a survey on national mainstreaming and non-discrimination policies
produce a resource pack, with information that can be used to raise awareness and share good-practice
organise national seminars to discuss the policies and the resource pack
produce national and European mainstreaming guidelines to further empower people with learning disabilities
hold a European conference, to disseminate our work
develop and maintain a website
The project findings will be widely shared. We believe that the outcomes of the project will be important to all members states, and particularly valuable to new member states as they develop practice.
The partners will ensure active participation of people with learning disabilities through all stages of the project and will develop strong relations with policy makers, such as social affairs, related ministries and governmental bodies.
